Full Text

The passengers on the down Sunday night express all tell big stories about the way the cows got knocked out when Pom Clarke pulled the cut throttle and went into the herd. The cows were sleeping quietly in the grass, and as the glare of the head-light woke them up they crowded into the track. When the locomotive hit the band the air was just thick with beef-steaks, bones and hides.
"Why," said one man, "the hides of some of the animals are hanging to the telegraph wires yet, and the meat is scattered all through the sage-brush."
It was the luckiest thing in the world that the train was not telescoped, as it passed over quite a gap in the track where the rails were torn up.
