Man Who Tried to Kill Guiteau Says He Shot McPherson in Self-Defence.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12.—William Jones, the man who tried to kill Guiteau, the murderer of President Garfield, was held to-day for the Grand Jury by the Coroner for killing John A. McPherson last night. McPherson was formerly attached to the Marine Corps. Jones killed him on the Bates farm, one mile north of Brookland, D. C. Jones's wife was a Miss Bates and they lived at the Bates homestead. Jones asserts that he shot McPherson in self-defence. McPherson had been living at the farm with them.

Jones told the police that he believed McPherson had a sinister motive in coming to live with him and that after they had been at the clubhouse drinking together and returned home McPherson raised a rifle to shoot him and he (Jones) grabbed the gun and shot McPherson.
