Full Text

May Day. Notwithstanding the "southerly wind and cloudy sky," May morning was so pleasant that the young people hereabouts made the usual pleasurable excursions in pursuit of flowers. The older members of the Academy here were early up "o'er hill and dale and far away," gathering the early blossoms of Spring; and upon returning, bore upon their heads tokens of success; when they paid their respects in a body to their esteemed teacher. In the afternoon, prompted by the example of their seniors, the children of the district school, with glad & joyful hearts paraded through our street and off to the woods to gather and decorate their brows with flowers and evergreens. In addition to these domestic exhibitions, a horse-back company of young people of both sexes from Danville, came to our village—all neatly and appropriately dressed for an equestrian excursion—and after a few hours entertainment at Hutchinson's Hotel, ere night set in, returned in fine style, to their homes.

So passed May Day with us.
