HON. J. B. ALLEN.
Honest, Able, a Man of Affairs and a Worker.
[Walla Walla Union.]

The canvass for nomination for delegate was opened in the early summer by the Republicans of Whitman county, who declared their choice to be Hon. J. B. Allen. As an unsolicited, spontaneous, expression of opinion it must be extremely flattering to a public man to get such recognition of his ability and availability as was given Mr. Allen by the Republicans of Whitman. That county held its convention and elected delegates to the territorial convention, who were instructed by unanimous vote to support Mr. Allen for the delegateship. Their action was immediately followed by that of the Republicans of Yakima county, who also expressed a decided preference for Mr. Allen. The papers on both sides of the Cascades state that wherever his candidacy is mentioned it shows strength—and growing strength. In his own home in Walla Walla, where Mr. Allen is well known, the idea of his being our leader in the election, and afterwards our representative at Washington, meets with a hearty approval, not alone by those who take an interest in political affairs but in the rank and file of his party there is a feeling of enthusiasm wherever his candidacy is mentioned.

Known to be honest, conscientious, a student, an orator and a man of affairs long a worker for the success of Republican principles, and one who has never asked of his party the consideration justly due his services and affinity, he will, if nominated, be elected by a majority greater than that ever given any other candidate. This is the sentiment of his neighbors, and it is agreed in by the press of the territory. It is not perhaps strange that a man's own home neighbors would support him, but it is strange, when, as in Mr. Allen's case, no voice is raised in opposition, where there is a practical unanimity of opinion, a determination to have him nominated. The citizens of the counties of Columbia, Garfield and Asotin, are as much his partisans as those of his own home. While in the district in which Judge Turner resides, it is extremely doubtful if that gentleman can secure even a complimentary vote in the convention so thoroughly are the people in favor of Mr. Allen's candidacy. The Union has a pride in mentioning the name of Hon. J. B. Allen as our candidate, as he possesses all the qualifications essential to a representative of the people in congress.
