Full Text
Her maid left her to get her supper; she had just began when the bell rung, and she heard a violent scream; she immediately ran up stairs, and when she got to the hall saw a great light on the stair-case—It instantly struck her that her Ladyship was on fire, and she accordingly called to two maid servants who happened to be in the house, who took up the hall mat, ran into the drawing room, and found her Ladyship's clothes all in flames.
They put the mat round her, but it had not the desired effect; they then got water and extinguished the fire. Her Ladyship was quite sensible the whole time, as she frequently called for more water. She was put to bed and lingered in great pain till half past six o'clock yesterday morning, when she expired.
Her Ladyship was in her 90th year, but very strong and active for her age She was aunt to the present duchess of Devonshire, to the Countess of Liverpool, Earl of Bristol, Earl Mulgrave, Honorable General Phipps, and Honorable Augustus Phipps.
