Full Text

It appears by the Warren Star, a Rhode Island paper, that the Dorrites of that State have become so ravenous of the spoils, and besiege Mr. Polk so incessantly for office, that he has become wroth and threatens to throw them all to the dogs, where they really belong, unless they pester him less with their applications, and present to him more reputable candidates. We hope this account of the matter is correct, and that the President has actually come to some sense of decency on this subject: for, he has either been most egregiously imposed upon, or he has voluntarily, and with his eyes open, made some of the most scandalous appointments in that State that an American President ever thought of or was ever cheated into. It was not to be expected of him, perhaps, to appoint prominent "law and order" men to office in Rhode Island—certainly not to be expected since his course in relation to such matters has developed itself—but it is a mortifying circumstance that he should have picked out the very worst ("specimens of Jacobinism to be found in the insurgent party. There are, we take it, comparatively respectable men even among the Dorrites, though there is no doubt of their great scarcity, among whom he might have selected decency enough to fit the few offices within his gift in Rhode Island. But even if such a selection had been found impracticable, there are "law and order" Loco Focos in sufficient numbers for the purpose, in the State—men of high and honorable character, and competent talent. Why have they been overlooked in the great desire to bestow office upon such men as have received appointments from Mr. Polk?—N. Y. Courier.
