Inconsistency.-The Democratic press are
actually abusive of the Hon. Truman Smith
because he is devoting his time and attention,
as one of the Whig Central Committee at
Washington, to the distribution of Whig do-
cuments, and at the same time, our opponents
are parading the fact that their Central Com-
mittee, at the head of which is Senator Foote,
of Mississippi, have scattered broadcast over
the land, under Congressional and Postoffice
franks, the enormous quantity of 1,500,000
democratic documents. The other members
of the committee are an assistant Postmaster
General and the Commissioner of Patents,
both receiving large salaries from the Treasu-
ry, and neglecting those duties, for the per-
formance of which they are pocketing the peo-
ple's money, in order to attend to electioneer-
ing. Yet Mr. Smith, whose time is his own,
and who is not quartered upon the public
Treasury, is to be vilified for doing the same
as the officials do to the neglect of their public
duties.
The National Intelligencer, in alluding to
the subject of a late Democratic meeting in
Washington says:
"The person who called the meeting to or-
der was a Clerk in a public office: so was the
presiding officer: and a large portion of the
Vice Presidents and Secretaries were employ-
ees of the Government, one of them being the
Warden of the Penitentiary, holding that
trust by Executive appointment. We learn,
indeed, from the newspapers and other sources,
that the officers of the Government, some of a
higher grade than Clerks, and some of a lower,
make a practice to spread themselves over the
land, and especially in doubtful districts of
the adjoining States, thus giving up to the em-
ployment of electioneering that time which
they owe to the public.
"But we are well assured that even more
crying abuses than this are practiced in public
institutions in this city, immediately under the
control and direction of the Administration.
We learn, for example, that the Convicts in
the Penitentiary are actually employed in pre-
paring and painting Democratic Transparen-
cies, for electioneering purposes not only in
this city, but in other quarters. Whether this
be a proper employment for these convicts our
readers are quite as competent to judge as we
are."--N. O. Bulletin.
