Last Monday, being James City court day, John Purcell, Edward Murphy, and James Stevens, who were jointly concerned in defrauding the treasury of this state, by forging sundry draughts upon it, to the amount of between six and seven thousand pounds, were tried by a jury, and found guilty, upon which the court gave judgment as follows: That Purcell be imprisoned for one year, and at the expiration thereof pay 552l. 4s. or continue in prison till he doth; that Murphy be imprisoned one month, and pay the sum of 15l. 1s. at the end of that term; and that Stevens be imprisoned three months, and pay 500l. Both to remain in prison till they do, or give security.
