CHINESE BEAT JAP THREAT

About a month ago, the Japanese inaugurated a push at Tungting Lake, apparently designed to knock the Chinese out of the war by capturing Chungking.

Reports from China were pessimistic. We were warned that the limit of Chinese resistance had been reached and that there was danger of a collapse. China, it was pointed out, could not hold out against Japan forever.

So what? The Chinese are celebrating one of their greatest victories of the war, moving forward over a great front, enveloping Japanese troops and annihilating a considerable number of their enemy.

The military picture in China is suddenly reversed and the Japanese, instead of endangering Chungking, the capital, have become the victims of a neat Chinese manoeuvre, conceived and executed on a large scale.

It may be safely asserted that a just peace will be denounced by Axis sympathizers in this country.

You can say one thing for the good old summer time: It brings no heating problems.
