THE SOUND MONEY DEMOCRATS
The Iowa republican platform makes just recognition of the action of the sound money democrats who have assisted the republican in maintaining a solid front against monetary fallacies, the eighth plank declaring "As republicans we make recognition of the loyalty and exalted patriotism of the sound money democrats and men of all parties who put aside partisanship in order to maintain the good faith of the nation, and in resistance of the Chicago platform and its candidate." All of this was deserved. Their subsequent attitude, up to this time, has also been worthy of commendation. What they may do hereafter remains to be determined, but from a consistent point of view they can hardly afford to endorse a party that even by indirection lends its aid to silverism. There are certain indications that the Iowa democrats will try to get together on a non-committal "harmony" platform this fall, in order to weld all the elements into one mass. Such a platform will not be a bold or courageous one, and it will make no appeals to this class on such grounds. For this reason, and because of their hitherto strenuous attitude against the heresies of their party, the allurement to vote the democratic ticket will not be strong. In fact the sound money democrats will accomplish more with their votes by casting them with republicans this year, as there is scarcely the ghost of a chance for the democracy in Iowa this season.
