Man Arrested in West Townshend Under $5,000 Bonds.
George Waltz of Haydenville, Mass., who was arrested by Massachusetts officers in West Townshend two weeks ago for alleged complicity in burglaries in and near Northampton, Mass., was held yesterday by the Northampton court under $5,000 bonds for the grand jury. Four other men, with whom it is alleged Waltz was associated, were held under heavy bonds.
No evidence was presented under the charge against Waltz that he had broken into W. J. Sheehan's store in Haydenville and stolen eight pairs of shoes and other articles. N. Seelve Hitchcock of Easthampton, who appeared for Waltz, said that it would be admitted that Waltz committed this break. It had been stated by one of the New York defendants that Waltz was associated with the two New York men and a man named Max in the break at the Easthampton jewelry store.
Officers Cook and Daly testified that Waltz had admitted showing others the situation at Taintor's jewelry store in Easthampton, but said he did not go with them to commit the burglary. He had stayed in the barn in the meadows that was one of the hiding places of the men, and the others had reported to him early in the morning of October 3 that they had met bad luck, having been fired upon by an officer and been forced to abandon their plunder.
