BANDA ORIENTAL.

A letter from Canelones states, that on the 8th inst. the Brazilians made a sally out of Monte Video, to the number of 1300 men, and marched towards Pando. In consequence of this, the provincial government, seated in Canelones, fearing a visit from these gentry, left the town, together with the archives and officers, and passed the night in a wood a little distance off. On the day following. they learned that the Brazilians had retired at 7 o'clock the preceding evening. The letter gives a very unfavorable account of the state of the Patriot lines without the city, as the troops on actual service do not exceed 100 men, which are inadequate to form a respectable corps of observation. Particular hopes are entertained of General Soler's being able to return with several hundred men, well mounted and armed.

General Alvear has appointed Brigadier Soler to the military command of the Banda Oriental, with all the plenitude of powers, which his Excellency the President has conferred on him.

The army of the Republic has fallen back to the Tacuarembo, for the purpose of recruiting its cavalry. It has upwards of 40,000 excellent horses in possession.

We are informed, that so apprehensive are the Imperialists of Monte Video. of an unfriendly visit from Admiral Brown, the guns in the batteries are kept double shotted, and the artillery men are made to sleep near them.
