'Innocent' Even When He Pleaded 'Guilty'

(By Associated Press)

HELENA, Mont., Mar. 28.-A defendant charged with selling liquor to Indians learned something about American law when he appeared before Judge James H. Baldwin in Federal District Court and pleaded guilty.

The judge, after talking to him, declined to accept the plea. Instead he postponed the trial and appointed an attorney to defend the man. Under the United States Constitution, said the judge, the defendant was entitled to legal counsel. There was a question whether his car, alleged to contain whisky, was searched legally.
