GOD KNOWS
As I draw near to the sunset slope
Of the life that God gave to me,
I turn mine eyes to the years long gone,
And visions once more I see.
I wanted to work for my Master here,
To loyally stand by His side;
I have failed so oft, and weak I have been,
But my Lord, He knows that I tried.
Careless sometimes I sadly admit,
And Alas! a coward too,
But never a traitor, Oh my Lord,
I have fought in the ranks for you.
Through despair I stumbled on,
Believing in Christ, my guide;
I trust His promises made in love,
And my Lord, He knows that I tried.
I have never known the world's applause,
Nor climbed to the heights of fame;
I have done no great or splendid thing
To win a proud, noble name.
No grand success has ever been mine,
I have no reason for pride,
But in all the tasks God gave to me,
He knows, He knows that I tried.
Some day I shall reach that happy place
Which He has prepared for me,
I shall find sweet peace on the other side
Where the many mansions be.
I shall not quail when the summons comes,
I have naught to fear or to hide.
No perfect work have I to present.
But my Lord, He knows that I tried.
