LONDON, May 8. 1771.
This morning as soon as it was certainly known that His Majesty would go to the House, to put an end to the Session of Parliament, Summons were issued from Guildhall to the Aldermen and Common Council to attend. At two o'clock one of the Aldermen and a great Number of the Common Council, went from thence to the Tower. On the Lord Mayor and Mr. Oliver, being brought to the Tower-gate by the proper officer of that fortress, they were saluted by 21 pieces of Canon belonging to the Artillery Company, the Members of which accompanied the procession in their uniforms, which made a fine appearance; they were 53 Carriages in the train. Sir William Stevenson, and the Aldermen Townend, Sawbridge, Wilkes, and Trecothick, were in the Procession; Only one of the Sheriffs, Mr. Martin, was present. The greatest Acclamations were continued all the way to the Mansion-House, not only from the People assembled in the streets, but amazing numbers testified their satisfaction from the windows of the Houses by which they passed. On the Lord Mayor and Mr. Alderman Oliver's arrival at the Mansion-House, the Artillery Company saluted them. They then sat in the state-coach till all the carriages of the Common Council passed, in order to return their salutes. The Lord Mayor and Mr. Oliver then ascended the steps at the Mansion-House, preceded by the mace and sword-bearers, and accompanied by the Aldermen and Sheriffs, amidst the incessant shouts and roars of applause of an incredible number of their grateful fellow-citizens. On their arrival at the balustrades fronting the great-gate the Lord-Mayor and Mr. Oliver bowed in return to the people assembled, and were again saluted with loud and universal Huzzas.
