Murder.--We have this day to record another outrageous act, which was perpetrated last night at about ten o'clock, at the corner of Sheriff and Delancy-streets. Mr. John Warner, a highly respectable young man, while engaged in closing the grocery store of the widow Missiple, was shot at by some person on the opposite side of the street. Two balls entered his body; one at the breast, and the other at the hip, the latter passing through the limb. The unfortunate youth exclaimed, "I am shot," and died in a few minutes.
A gun was found this morning, in or close to a wagon, near the spot whence the shot came. It is a peculiar one;--the middle band being off, and the stock split; and it is without a ram-rod. It is placed in the store of Alderman Boyd, in Grand street.
The deceased was the son of Judge Warner, of River Head, Long Island, and was much esteemed.
An inquest was held this morning on the body. The jury returned a verdict that John Warner was shot with a musket last night about ten minutes after ten o'clock, by some person or persons unknown.
The person or persons who committed this diabolical act are yet at large. We are informed that suspicion rests upon two young men, whose names it would be improper to mention at this time. The proper authorities will do their duty.
