PETERSBURG, July

Two of the members belonging to the Petersburg Republican Light Infantry, have returned on furlough. They left the following companies at Cabin Point on Friday evening, viz. the Richmond Light Infantry Blues, the Richmond Republican Blues, the Petersburg Republican Light Infantry, and a company of Militia from this town—in all about 500 men. The troops were in high health and spirits, and animated alike with one sentiment, that of love for their country, and an ardent desire to avenge its wrongs. The cavalry had proceeded on their march, and it was supposed would reach Norfolk on Sunday—the foot companies were expected to arrive this day—Barracks had been provided for them in Portsmouth.

It is conjectured, that unless the Proclamation of the President is instantly complied with, an attack will be made on the British ships by such force as can be collected, which will probably consist of the French frigates now in Norfolk, and the gun boats lying fitted out by Commodore Decatur.

A vessel passed Alexandria on the 7th inst. with 750 muskets for the gun-boats at Norfolk, having Lieut. Terrell on board, who, it is said, is to take command of those vessels.
