The Hon. Andrew Johnson, the Governor of Tennessee, commenced life in an alms-house in North Carolina. He remained there until his eighth year when he was apprenticed to a tailor. Having married at twenty-one, he started off barefoot, with his wife at his side, and, having reached a certain township in Tennessee, opened a tailor's shop and soon obtained a competency. He subsequently became a member of both branches of the Legislature, and served three terms in Congress, and is now Governor of the State.
