Convention Address—"It is a document full of sound political doctrine, breathing patriotism in every line. The Convention is most ably defended from the foul aspersions thrown upon it by the Opposition. The committee enter into a historical detail of the causes which have led to the assembling of conventions, by which means concert of action could be secured to the Democratic party. They show conclusively that Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, justified and approved the congressional caucus nominations, and accepted those nominations. They examine the question of the election of President falling upon the House of Representatives; and they prove, satisfactorily, that nothing which could befall the American people, is so much to be deprecated.
"The objections, so industriously propagated by the enemies of the People, against the Convention, are refuted, and their fallacies made apparent. The attempt to create sectional parties and divisions is carried home to the Opposition. A high eulogium is paid to the distinguished services of our present Chief Magistrate: and an earnest call is made upon the Democratic Republicans of the Union to unite upon a man who will carry out the principles of Andrew Jackson. It is needless to say that Martin Van Buren has been called unanimously to fill the high office of President of the United States. Pursuing the path pointed out by the immortal Jefferson, and the illustrious Jackson, Mr. Van Buren and Col. Richard M. Johnson will triumph over the enemies of the People, and the Baltimore Convention will deserve the thanks of the Democratic party."
