On Monday se'nnight, as Sir C. Bampfylde was passing along Montague Square, he was shot at by a man of the name of Morland, who immediately drawing another pistol from his pocket, placed the muzzel in his mouth and blew away the upper part of his head. It appears the unfortunate man's wife had been for nine years the housekeeper of Sir Charles, who probably noticed her a superior, in her line of life. Morland very naturally became jealous of this attention, and frequently suffered his feelings to urge him to measures of a violent nature. He was at one time noticed by Sir C. who set him up in a public-house in Scotland where he was unfortunate, and he returned destitute to London, Sir C. (says report) was about to make a settlement on him, when his wife broached circumstances which prevented him. He however frequented the house, and was frequently very restive, and was at last held to bail for an offence committed there. On the day in question Sir C. was accosted by him, and asked to say whether he intended prosecuting him, to which he replied, yes, and desired him to begone, when he fired the pistol & wounded Sir C. in the right shoulder. His own suicide almost immediately followed. On Thursday an inquisition was held on the body. A verdict of felo-de-se was returned, and in pursuance of it the body of the poor wretch was on Tuesday morning buried with the whole of the inhuman, brutal ceremony of driving a stake through body, in the cross-road opposite St. John's Chapel, near the Regent's Park.
