Aug. 6. Friday last Capt. Gordon, Commander of the Mercury Privateer, who left Port Royal the 20th ult. engaged a French Privateer Brig. of 14 six Pounders, and 130 Men, for two Hours and a Half, wherein he exchanged upwards of 40 Broad-sides. There were several killed and wounded on both sides, and unfortunately the gallant Capt. Gordon; whereupon the Command fell upon the brave Capt. Connell, who would have fought the Vessel while she could swim, but falling short of Ammunition, he prudently returned into Port Royal to refit.
