REBELS MAKE FURTHER GAINS

ARMY ONLY A FEW MILES FROM THE CITY OF TORREON

THE TURNING POINT

The Ensuing Battle Will Make or Mar the Fortunes of The Constitutionalists

Constitutional Hospital Base, Remojillo, Durango, Mexico, March 21. - The rebel net about Torreon virtually was drawn closer today and General Herrera fought the most important battle of the week at Santa Clara, 22 miles north of Torreon. In the engagement 106 Federals were killed, according to reports. The rebel loss is reported as slight, three killed and seven wounded.

The fight took place over possession of a spot on the banks of the Big Tlahualilo irrigation ditch, where Herrera wishes to throw a bridge and the construction of which he began immediately on retirement of the enemy, whose numbers he estimated at 400.

At other points the Federal advance guards retreated perceptibly, burning and wrecking as they went. At Noe the small railroad shops were burned.

Villa Elated.

General Villa was elated beyond measure, and when he took possession of a telephone wire which worked into the city of Torreon, he lost no time in calling up the office of the Federal commander, General Refugio Velasco. An officer of the latter's staff answered the call.

"I am coming to have supper with you," General Villa heard.

"Who are you?" inquired the Federal officer politely.

"I am an officer called Francisco Villa," replied the chieftain.

"Well come whenever you are ready," came the answer.

Villa talked through this city which he took at a gallop and without resistance. His scouts brought word that the Federals had made a poor job of wrecking the railroad tracks.

This camp where Villa has a tremendous store of ammunition, is just outside the city and was the scene of great activity today as cartridges and shells were being forwarded by rail and packed on mules and burros to Herrera, Benavides, Contreras and other generals.

George C. Carothers, United States Consular agent, today was given renewed assurance of fair treatment to foreigners by General Villa.
