IMPORTANT FROM THE SOUTH.
From the Clarion, (a Tex. pap.) Dec. 17.
THE BRITISH AT PENSACOLA.
The following letter from Col. Bowyer to Gen. Claiborne was forwarded by
Express from him to his Excellency Governor Blount. It puts us in possession of news which we have long anticipated.
"Mobile, Nov. 26, 1813."
Sir--I have this moment received a letter from Captain Alexis, commanding the navy at Mobile Point, stating positively, that a large British expedition has arrived at Pensacola, consisting of 7 sail of vessels and two Bomb vessels. That some brigs have 200 men on board. I shall leave this by 12 o'clock for the Point, with all the troops I can possibly spare from this post, with a determination to defend that post to the utmost. This will leave Mobile weak and exposed. I have written to Lt. Col. Russell requesting him to fall back to this place with the 3rd regt. Should he comply, I think I shall be able to save this country; but should he not feel himself justified in giving up his present objects, I fear the whole country will be lost. Should you have an opportunity, pray write to Col. M'Kee and give him this information. The communication to Pensacola by land is cut off by a large body of Indians.
I am in haste yours, &c.
JOHN BOWYER,
Lt. Col. 2d Infantry Commanding.
Gov. Claiborne.
