Full Text

A gentleman who arrived in this city a few days ago, from New Orleans via Louisville and Cincinnati, informs us that there were thousands of Union men in that city when he left in June, and that citizens conversed freely and openly in favor of the Union; but he says, in the country towns, the secession spirit was very violent. As they had, at that time, commenced to draft men for the army, every one who could leave was doing so, and the steamer in which he left New Orleans had upwards of five hundred passengers, who gave three cheers for the Union when a short distance from the wharf.
