THE CITY INDIGNANT.

From the way they are emasculating the Electric Light Bill at Charleston it looks as if the city has no rights that anyone is bound to respect.

If ever there was an indignant community—indignant from the ground up—it is right in this city. And all because they have unanimously expressed their wish to have granted the privilege of supplying themselves with electric light and power and the request is not heeded. What can possess the members of the Legislature who oppose this request? Do they realize they are upholding a monopoly which is sapping the life out of the city's present gas plant? Do they realize that this town is virtually a unit on this vital question to her citizens? There is no opposition to it except the lobby, who seem to have unusual and mysterious power over the understanding of some members. We simply want the right to live as economically as possible and transact our business in the same manner. The people are astonished, as well as indignant, that a monopoly should be so favored—that they must be compelled to pay tribute to a few persons for their personal behoof and benefit.

The Legislature should awaken to the intense feeling that exists here. The resolution passed by the Council Committee on Lights and the Board of Gas Trustees last night is but the voice of all. Take heed of our need and our request, gentlemen, and act favorably.
