Women--There has been a period when women were considered not only an inferior race, but when doubts were entertained whether they belonged to the human species. Holcroft, in his travels through Holland, France, &c. introduces the following passage:--"St. Foix quotes Gregory of Tours to prove that at the council of macon, the question whether women were or were not human beings, was hotly disputed; and after such division of sentiment, it was at last solemnly decreed in the council that women did not constitute a part of the human race!" The late Miss Jane Taylor says:-"I do believe the reason why so few men, even among the intelligent, wish to encourage the mental cultivation of women, is their excessive love of the good things of this life: they tremble for their dear stomachs; concluding that woman who could taste the pleasures of poetry or sentiment, would never descend to pay due attention to those exquisite flavors in pudding or pie, that are so gratifying to their philosophic palates; and yet, poor gentlemen, it is a thousand pities they should be so mistaken; for after all, who so much as a woman of sense and cultivation, will feel the real importance of her domestic duties; or who so well, cheerfully, perform them?"
