FROM THE SALEM GAZETTE.

LORD ELDON.

In our paper of the 11th September we republished (from the Portsmouth Journal) a biographical sketch of those eminent men, Sir William Scott and his brother, Lord Eldon. In that article it was stated that their father was "master of a small vessel employed in carrying coals from Newcastle to London;" and that the father "devoted a large portion of his scanty earnings to the education of his sons." By the following extract (which has been handed us by a correspondent) it will be seen that Lord Eldon feels none of that foolish pride which often induces weak people to endeavour to cast out of sight their humble origin; but on the contrary, that he is quite willing, in presence of all the Peers of Great-Britain, to make an allusion to his early life, which could not fail to call up the circumstance of his having been familiar with the Newcastle Colliers. The extract is from Dow's Reports of Cases decided in the House of Lords: "Though he (Lord Eldon) did not pretend to much skill in nautical matters, yet he had an opportunity of hearing more of the conversations of seamen, than perhaps any Judge on the bench; and, if he were on board a collier, he should not be much afraid though he heard the seamen talking about fresh gales and squally weather."

A biographical sketch republished from the Portsmouth Journal describes Lord Eldon and his brother Sir William Scott's father as a master of a small vessel carrying coals from Newcastle to London, who devoted much of his earnings to their education. An extract from Dow's Reports shows Lord Eldon proudly alluding to his familiarity with Newcastle colliers in the House of Lords, unafraid of nautical conversations.
