TOO BAD
Too bad that Dare County did not set the date for hearings before its board of equalization just three days earlier than that selected. With how much greater patriotic fervor might the non-resident owners of beach property raised the cry of "Taxation without representation," had the day fallen upon the Glorious Fourth.
Denied the stimulus of the anniversary, the embattled taxpayers will probably be willing to compromise, by waiving considerations of representation in favor of lower taxes; which may not, after all, be too far removed from the Spirit of '76.
With the Dare County beach resort increasing in popularity and summer population real estate prices have risen, and with rising prices increased taxes are inevitable. Whether a nice balance between value and valuation for taxation, or a complete impartiality between one man's property and that of his neighbour, has been maintained is a subject for debate.
There is no well-authenticated record that any tax assessor during some seven thousand years of recorded history has succeeded in pleasing the taxpayer, and it is hardly probable that those of Dare County will better the record.
