A FRIGHTENED MAN.

June 27, 1876,

Editor Democrat—If my writing is indistinct this morning you must excuse it, on the ground of my being very badly scared. For several days past I have been greatly disturbed in mind, and my nerves have been quite unstrung by the knowledge that we had all been again put under the command of the bold Piegan murderer and bandit smasher, Phil. Sheridan. Quiet sleep has deserted my eyes, and my imagination has been filled with horrid visions of pale, bloody bandits, skewered on bayonets, and of others hanging promiscuous from lamp posts and balconies, and with the sight of the mighty Phil, eating three or four bandits for breakfast every morning, using his sabre for a knife and a bayonet for a fork, and with gunpowder as a condiment. I had in a measure recovered from the first shock, when here this morning I am all thrown into a sympathetic heat by the Republican's article upon Lieut. Col. Brooke, and the cold-blooded congratulations it extends to our neighbors in Baton Rouge and the Felicianas. I am somewhat assured, however, by the Republican's assertion that "Col. Brooks is a soldier, and knows that his highest duty is to preserve peace." I fear, however, that the Republican is only lying again, and that Col. Brooke has been sent up there only to give the Webers, Lanes and such gentry the assurance that they may go it a little blind, so far as he is concerned, in raising Cain in their section. I hope, however, that Col. Brooke does know his duty as a United States officer. If he don't and should step outside of his duty and intermeddle in other people's business some there are.
