Ostend, February 7th. Mr. Potter, one of his Majesty's messengers, arrived at the Treasury from Berlin, and shortly afterwards Mr. Ekins, another messenger, who had brought advices of Holland being likely in war. Wednesday last: and there were no accounts of the city of Amsterdam having surrendered. All advices are said to have certainly reached, that near 6,000 troops had been sent to the West Indies by the French government, which they intend to send out in small vessels, in each of which were not more than 70 men, and that some attack was meditated against our West-India islands. -The advices so far have been received by government from the Governor of Jamaica.

In the meantime the Dutch trade during the disturbances, has dwindled almost to nothing. In the distribution of this among neighbouring nations; Great Britain gets the better part.

The cause of the French war, if such an event should take place, will be on account of the Cape of Good Hope and the island Trincomalee, which the French sometime since garrisoned, and will refuse to surrender to the Dutch.

The forces the French have at the Cape of Good Hope, are according to common supposition thoroughly well appointed, and with artillery and store, in the best condition.
