Full Text

A letter from New-Jersey mentions, "Our harvest, saddened, and the husband's toil is confounded by the destroying worm; the devastation is visible through the counties of Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, and Morris; the effects in the other parts of Jersey I cannot inform, as only these have come under my observation; but I am confident, in the district above mentioned, the farmers will not acquire the seed which they sowed. The hand of the Almighty lays heavy upon us, and I despond of seeing it remove until our manners are reformed, and our peace offerings more acceptable to the Deity. Rapacious worms and hostile armies are only his instruments."
