Will Save the Lives of 3,000,000 of India's Poor Within Five Years
That the thornless cactus produced by Luther Burbank will save the lives of 3,000,000 of India's poor within five years is the prophecy made by the Rev. Chas. A. Young who was mentioned by the Yuma Examiner, a few days ago, as having passed through that city on his way from San Diego to Sonora.
While he is in Mexico he expects to hold a conference with officials of that republic with a view to the introduction of this wonderful cactus in that country. He also expects to go to India in time and thinks that climate and soil will produce a world of cheap food for the poor of that country.
"Prof. Burbank," Dr. Young told friends, "was fifteen years and made 20,000 crossings before he finally succeeded in producing a genuine thornless cactus. The old style cactus was forced by the exigencies of nature in its struggle for existence, to throw out the long spines and thorns and much of the virility of the plant went into them. As a food the cactus in its present state is valueless, as it is woody and ashy. But the thornless cactus will have body and substance of character which will give ample nutrition. It is already practically impossible for the Burbank gardens to meet the demands for the plants."-Yuma Examiner.
