LETTER FROM DOVER, N. H.
Rain.—Freshet Expected.—Hibernian Levee.—Young Catholic Friend's Levee.—Dignitaries on their Muscle.—Newspapers—Sergeant Thayer of 7th Regiment—Cocheco Falls—Important Legislation—The Mirror.
Dover, April 22, 1862.
Ed. Mirror:- "Better late than never."
After a while old Pluvius has let loose the flood-gates of his great reservoir and is pouring down upon the world below with Allopathic abundance, his long accumulated stock of "moisture," "heavy dew," abundant wetness;" otherwise and more practically speaking "it rains like blazes." The snow is disappearing with great swiftness. Brooks, streams not brooks, and rivers neither, are "high, higher, highest" than for many years. The Cocheco river, above the Central street bridge one day last week rose nearly up to the edge of several of the buildings and overflowed considerable of the land on the north side. It fell considerably Sunday but the rain of to-day is bringing it up again and a rousing freshet is looked for.
Water is a good thing, a capital thing—in its place. Many people have not found out whether it is poisonous or not. They fear it is as a beverage. This is a great misfortune, to say the least. Mind you, we do not belong to the S. of M. so we are not prejudiced against "the aquatic article."
The Hibernians, James Knatt, President, held their levee at the City Hall last evening. It was quite a pleasant occasion, a number of their outside friends being present and the exercises interesting.
Vocal music by Messrs Everett, Pinkham, pianist Prof. L. P. Whitney, and as a wind-up, dancing; music by Colbath & Goldsmith's band. During the evening, two children, son and daughter of Mr. Daniel Sullivan, recently from Providence, performed several airs upon the piano, exhibiting unusual ability and beauty of style, eliciting the hearty applause of the company present. They promise to be proficient in the art.
The Young Catholic Friend's Society, John Lyons, President, intend giving an entertainment at the American Hall, in about a fortnight. Their demonstrations have been among the most successful of the season.
Several of our 'men of eminent gravity" including His Honor Mayor Bickford, Col. Geo. H. Peirce, Ald. Bickford, S. C. Fisher, Esq., several city officers and other influential citizens, engaged in a game of base ball last Wednesday, the 16th, on Osborne's Hill. Verily, it was an inspiriting scene; great development of muscle, re-assertion of speed, and general healthy exercise being the result. Youth still continues its blithe and active sway even over some whose hair is tinged with gray or whose frame is rheumatic. This does not refer to the above party—they are young men. This is an age of Development most certainly.
News! News! News! Everybody seems to have "the delirious tremendous" after news. Their appetite is enormous. Sensations fly thick and fast concerning the great contest going on, and John C. Varney's Periodical depot is besieged daily by "everybody," the Journals, Travellers and Heralds being scattered like incense, "over the region, round about." This war is educating the people by the spread of Intelligence, if nothing else Mr. Varney has published a pamphlet edition of McClellan's Great Dream, Hoag's Vision, and Washington's Prophecy, which is a great card and is causing an extensive sale.
Orderly Sergeant Wm. F. Thayer, of Company F. 7th N. H. Regiment now at Tortugas, has sent home several rare specimens of coral, a few of which are displayed in Mr. Varney's window. Mr. T. is one of the finest drilled and thoroughly military appearing soldiers in the regiment. He is one of the old S. G's. which accounts for his proficiency.
The Cocheco Falls have been "magnificent" the past week, a Niagara on a small scale. The foaming and rolling waters have thundered their mighty music with thrilling voice, dashing over the huge rocks like a powerful army bent on destruction, scattering their misty forces and hurling the overwhelming spray in wide magnificence around. over, and about the whole "field of battle."
Old Dover is proud of "the Falls." They are a great institution.
Several important measures will probably come up in the next Legislature and among them a repeal of the present inefficient Liquor Law is strongly urged. The present system indirectly offers a premium upon the sale of intoxicating drinks, by permitting the consumer, after one sale by the seller, to demand continued sales, under penalty of disclosure and prosecution. Whereas if a stringent License law was in force, the best class of sellers would constitute, as a general thing, "the trade" and the countless dram-shops which infest our communities "would die of starvation." Dealers could sell with discretionary powers and deny selling to any one they please. It seems to be demanded by public exigency and necessity that some such law should be passed. The Mayor of this city, Hon. A. Bickford and several of our influential citizens are decidedly in favor of "the new movement"
For the benefit of the small army of friends which the Mirror does and may have, we will say that it can be found every Friday at the counter of J. C. Varney, Central street, an enterprising News agent.
