Full Text

A rosebud in my garden grew,
Caressed by leaflets green:
Red as the ruby's crimson hue.
Its petals partly seen,
Part hidden in the soft embrace
Of shielding, verdant arms:
Perchance its most enduring grace,
The promise of its charms.
The story of its blood-red heart.
Impatient thought revealed:
The tender leaves I tore apart.
Which held its leaf concealed:
But sadly, for without avail
I sought the treasured worth:
The tender leaves, the petals frail,
Are fallen to the earth,
Not to uncouth, rough-handed might.
Its deepest glory shown:
This to the kiss of heavenly light
The rosebud yields alone.
Passion the soul of man may move.
Ambition rend, and strife
Alone may wake the kiss of love.
Its noblest powers to life. -K. M.
