Full Text

There has been a singular contest between two churches and the borough authorities of the Pennsylvania town of Huntingdon. The spread of small pox caused such alarm that an ordinance was passed prohibiting public assemblies for religious or other purposes. The ordinance was obeyed by all denominations except two, the Roman Catholic and Methodist. Those churches were opened as usual. The Chief of Police seized the keys of the Methodist Church from the sexton and prevented the building from being occupied. An effort was also made to prevent the Roman Catholics from assembling, but it was only partially successful, some of them having gained an entrance before the arrival of the police. On the following day the priest, Father Murphy, was arrested and fined ten dollars.
