PARTY IS ISSUED
IN SOUTH DAKOTA
By CLIFTON HICKS
HURON, S. D. — (FP).— All groups "willing to aid in regaining the stolen heritage of the common people" are called on to send representatives to Huron February 4 to launch a third party in South Dakota, draw up a platform and nominate candidates.
The call is issued by Chairman Edward Welsh of the South Dakota Farmer-Labor Progressive Association.
Many local, county and city units of the South Dakota Federation of Labor and the Farmers Union are expected to send delegates, although neither organization went on record for a Farmer Labor Party at their conventions last fall. Moral support has been pledged the third party movement by Pres. Oscar Brekke of the South Dakota Holiday Association.
In Brown county an anti-capitalist party has already been formed, with representation of various groups from Townsend clubs to Communists.
The Townsend movement is spreading rapidly in South Dakota, and here it has some elements of militancy, M. S. Carpenter, state Townsend manager insists that no member of a political party may address a Townsend club as a politician—"if he wants to join the club all right, but let him come in and sit down as one of the boys." He is noted for the cracks he takes at reactionary politicians when they appear on the program with him. Carpenter declares that there must be redistribution of wealth, that the rich must stand the brunt of the Townsend sales tax feature and that there must be rank-and-file control of political representatives.
