HUNGARIAN, RUMANIAN GRAIN, OIL, SAID HITLER'S ACTUAL AIM
WASHINGTON, Sept. 28. (UP).

Hitler's demand for the Sudeten region of Czechoslovakia was merely a "camouflage" to hide his real aim of obtaining access to the wheat fields of Hungary and the oil of Rumania, Czech Minister Vladimir Hurban said last night in an interview.

Hurban, who has just returned from a visit to his country, said most of Hitler's charges about conditions in the Sudeten were "absolutely false."

"His real aim is expansion through Central Europe into Eastern Europe and into the fields of Hungary, Rumania, Poland and the Ukraine. It is all written in his book, 'My Struggle,' And we alone stand in his way.

"It is plain from his last plan that he intends to destroy us completely because he demands regions in all parts of Czechoslovakia, which, if given to Germany, would cut us to pieces. We could no longer exist as a nation.

"His aim is to reach the Danube by which he will have a channel to the east, as well as overland connections. His excuse is that we oppress the Germans in the Sudeten."

Hurban said the only avenue to peace he could foresee at this stage in the crisis was for the democratic nations to stand firmly together.

Hurban contended there never was a "Sudeten problem" until Hitler came to power or even until the Anschluss of Germany and Austria.

He contested Hitler's assertion that there is no Czechoslovakian nation.

"Hitler will be deadly sure he made a mistake when he meets my Slovak people—if he dares—who will face him the same as the Czechs," he said.

Hurban said it was a misconception that the Sudeten Germans wanted "to go home" to Germany as Hitler claimed. He said the Sudeten never was in all history part of Germany, but was for centuries part of the Kingdom of Bohemia which regained after the World war its liberty lost over 300 years ago.

In support of his contention that Hitler used the Sudetens as an "excuse" or "camouflage" for other purposes, Hurban cited Hitler's silence about the Germans living in Italy, of whom he said there were half a million utterly without cultural rights to keep

Event Details

Czech Minister Vladimir Hurban, returning from Czechoslovakia, stated in a Washington interview that Hitler's Sudeten demands camouflage his aim to access Hungarian wheat fields and Rumanian oil for expansion into Eastern Europe, as outlined in 'My Struggle.' He denied Sudeten oppression claims, asserted no historical Sudeten-German ties, and warned of Czechoslovakia's destruction if demands met. Hurban foresaw peace only through democratic unity and contested the existence of a Sudeten problem before Hitler's rise.
