COLUMBUS—On Thursday, August 7, the State Public Game Hearing was held in the Ohio Departments Building, Columbus, O., where members of the Wildlife Council and officials of the Ohio Division of Wildlife heard recommendations from each of the farmer and sportsmen representatives of each of the five inland conservation districts of the State.
Technical information concerning various species of game was also furnished the Council by personnel of the Game Management Section.
With but few exceptions most farmers and sportsmen representatives recommended minor changes in the hunting regulations.
Districts two, four, five and six recommended the squirrel season remain the same as last year (September 15 through September 30). District three recommended an open season from October 1 through October 15.
The game management section recommended the squirrel season be from September 15 through October 15 (an extension of two weeks over last year). This recommendation was based on information supplied by Dr. Floyd Chapman, Assisting Chief of Game Management and forest game specialist. According to Chapman, there is a good supply of squirrels but a rather short supply of food which means if the squirrels aren't harvested by the hunters many may die during the winter.
Most district representatives were satisfied with the rabbit season opening on November 15 and closing January 1, but two districts (four and five) recommended longer shooting hours each day. District six asked for a possession limit of eight after the first day rather than four as it has been for a number of years.
The Game Management Section recommended no changes in the rabbit season from last year.
Based on information furnished by Bill Hendershot, Game Management Supervisor in Wildlife
District Number 2, the Game Management Section recommended an extension of one week for pheasant hunting from November 15 through December 6. According to Hendershot, more roosters should be harvested, and since the average life expectancy of a pheasant is eight months the hunters should make better use of this resource.
Districts three, four, five and six recommended the same season as last year (November 15 through November 30) with districts four and five asking for longer shooting hours each day.
According to the roadside kill of deer, and other information compiled by Merrill Gilfillan, Game Management Section, Ohio Division of Wildlife, Ohio hunters should enjoy an open deer season the coming winter. The Game Management Section recommended an open deer season in 44 counties in eastern Ohio. Also recommended were the dates of December 8 and 9 for archers only and December 10-11-12 for gunners only.
Most of the district representatives recommended a deer season with dates left to the discretion of the Wildlife Council.
