The Pittsburgh Christian Witness.—This paper is now owned, published and edited by the Western Executive Committee of the Anti-Slavery Society of Pennsylvania. We are glad of this transfer. Another blot is wiped from the Baptist name.—(Ky.) Baptist Banner.

The above is a fair specimen of the sentiment and spirit of slaveholding Christianity. What was this "blot" upon the "Baptist name?" Why, the Christian Witness had adopted the language of Jeremiah "Woe to him who buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; who useth his neighbor's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work." And of Isaiah, "Loose the bands of wickedness; undo the heavy burdens; let the oppressed go free; break every yoke." And of the Savior of men, "Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them."

No doubt so faithful a witness very much disturbed those who are in the constant violation of these sacred injunctions—especially, as the Witness was withal a Baptist, would its rebukes be felt by those who do these unchristian things and yet call themselves Baptists as well as Christians.

Identified as the Telegraph has been with the cause in which the Witness has been laboring, there is no need of our stopping to disclaim against this assumption of the Baptist organ in Kentucky, that Baptists generally are the supporters and defenders of Southern slavery, a system that came not from above, but from beneath. We appeal, however, to the Baptist press generally in the North—even in New-England—and ask our brethren candidly, whether they feel their garments to be clean touching this matter? What have they yet done or said, that their influence, without a disclaimer, will not join with this sustainer of slavery in casting so foul an aspersion on the "Baptist name?"
