FOR THE OFFICES.—Now that the election is over, the contests for the offices to be filled by the General Assembly will attract more attention than they have yet done. There is a great army of candidates in the field and others may enter yet. Nearly all of the State officers have opposition already, and some of the few who have escaped thus far may wake up any fine morning to find another Richard in the field. There is going to be a race between Messrs. Ryan and Saunders for the Speakership of the House, but the two contests of overshadowing interest are those over the offices of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Superintendent of the Penitentiary. A hard fight is being made on Mr. Massey by some of those who are fighting for a change in our school histories, and the sheriffs will put forth every effort to compass the defeat of Major Lynn. But both will be found very hard men to down.
