On the 16th arrived at Beaumaris the Swan Sloop, Daniel Stringer Master,

from Lisbon, with Wine and Fruit, who says that he left Lisbon the 20th

Ult. and on the first Instant, in Lat. 49. 12. Long 5. 40. W from London.

he was boarded by Capt. Pahone of the Elizabeth, a French Ship of 250

Tons, mounted with six Guns, and 60 Men. of and from St. Malo, bound

to Quebec with Provisions and warlike Stores; that Pahone opened all the

Letters on board, searched the Ship, took away some wearing Apparel and

Cloaths, five Watches, all Capt. Stringer's private Venture and

Stores, 12 Chests of House Carpenter's Tools, belonging to 11 Passengers;

and, after detaining Capt. Stringer four Days, obliged him to ransom his

Ship for £200, and leave his Mate as Hostage.

The Frenchmen, about four Days before, had also taken the Nancy

Brigantine, of and from London, bound to Gibraltar, laden chiefly with

Porter, which was plundered in the same Manner, and afterwards ransomed

for £300, and the chief Mate given as Hostage, who told Capt. Stringer,

that his Owner's Name was Mackenzie, Merchant in London.
