The One Gray Hair.
By Walter Savage Landor.

The wisest of the wise,
Listen to many a one,
And some in his youth, and more when he grows old.
I never sat among
The choir of Wisdom's sense
But pretty Jane loved I
As well as any Kin,
When youth is on the wing;
And (must it these be told?) when youth had quite gone by,
Alas! and I have not
The pleasant hour forgot,
When one pert lady said—
"Oh, Landor: I am quite
Bewildered with affright;
I see (do not you now:) a white hair on your head,"
Another, more tender,
Drew out that hair of mine,
And in her ear of dark hair
Pretended to hide (round
That ear, and twirled it round—
Fair miss she was, she too young was fair.
