THE FISHERIES

Are among the richest mines of Massachusetts; and we are happy in learning their success and extension, not only on the Banks but in our bays and harbours. In a part of the town of Gloucester, (Cape Ann) they have about one hundred boats in the home fishery—the proportion of each of which the last summer, has averaged four hundred quintals—making a product of 40,000 quintals, caught by the virtuous and hardy fishermen of one small town. The craft in which they fish are navigated by two or three men; and are fitted out at a moderate expense. "Truly with every fish we draw out of the sea, we draw out a piece of silver."
