SONNET TO SNUFF.

Best solace of life's weary woes,

'Thou joy and comfort of my nose,

Hail glorious snuff!

Let sages teach in prose sublime.

And poets rave in puling rhyme,

Of wisdom's lore, and beauty coy—

Such themes, my fragrant Maccaboy,

Are stupid stuff.

If men complain of worldly cares,

If women shed deceitful tears,

They take no snuff.

When men are false, and women frail,

And crimes and suicides prevail,

And lawyers thrive on many a fee—

Thou art not used, divine Rappee,

One half enough.

When men are happy, women kind.

And all are honest then we find

They do take snuff.

While men wear noses made to sneeze,

Thy grateful scent must ever please,

Thou fragrant essence of the weed—

All praise to thee then be decreed,

Besides this puff!
