Full Text

Postmaster Broussard has made application to the government for an extension of rural route No. 3 to Jefferson's Island, or for the establishment of a new route as Uncle Sam deems best.

In the settlement around the Jefferson Island neighborhood, there are something like seventy-five families and they are entitled to a free delivery service if we build roads that can be reached by the carriers.

We hope that the request of these people will be granted and that the delivery will be made through the New Iberia postal officials.

Right here we wish to call the attention of our New Iberia merchants to the fact that the business men of Abbeville are attracting a great deal of trade from people who live in Iberia Parish and it is time for them to go after business in that vicinity.

Of course, we admit that these people began to trade in our sister parish because of the impassable bog holes on the Jefferson road leading into New Iberia.

Now that we will very soon have model gravel roads this trade can be brought back to New Iberia if we only show them that we want their business.

On the other hand we must not trust absolutely to the good roads bringing this trade here unless a systematic effort is made to turn the drift this way again.

The merchants of Abbeville are wide-awake themselves and we must offer special inducements to get business from that territory if we want to profit from good roads.

The settlement has about seventy-five families entitled to free delivery if roads are built. Hope granted through New Iberia postal officials. New Iberia merchants advised to attract trade from Iberia Parish residents currently going to Abbeville due to poor roads, but with upcoming gravel roads, systematic efforts needed to bring trade back.
