We take a wicked pleasure in giving the exhibition that is presented in this morning's Gazette of the astonishing result of the retrenchment and reform of this Administration. As Mr. McDuffie said, the other day, we are "advancing backwards" at a prodigious rate.

The array of the Army of Office holders in the City of New York, now brought into the field to sustain Power in its assaults upon LIBERTY, is appalling.

The aggregate amount of the salaries of the Custom House Officers alone there is $340,000. All this patronage is brought into conflict against the people's rights.

It must be remembered that the House of Representatives has expressed no opinion on the sufficiency of the Secretary's reasons for the Removal of the Deposites. That question was blinked. The Managers beat all round the bush but never touched it. It is probable, that if a yes vote on that question could be obtained there it might be defeated. The House stands in a singular position--the effect of party discipline,--the majority afraid to vote upon the acts of those whom it sustains.

The Richmond Enquirer publishes a letter from Fairfax, which says that "Mr. Daniel, the pro-Jackson candidate, must be elected by a large majority over Mr. Ball." Nous verrons, nous verrons, Mr. Enquirer. We shall see. Never count your chickens before they are hatched.
