Mrs Packard is at Salem selling her books and endeavoring to work her measures for the amelioration of the condition of the insane through the State Legislature. There is unusual interest in matters pertaining to the insane in Oregon at present. Dr. Hawthorne is trying to have continued his hold upon the institution, while another party are trying to wrest it from him, and a third favor the erection of State buildings at an estimated cost of $300,000.
