From a London paper of August 29.

The schooner John, arrived at Plymouth,
from Oporto, which place she left on the
12th inst. bringing intelligence that the
Friends transport arrived there from England
a few days previous to her sailing
with about 5000 stand of arms on board.
and another transport laden with shoes for
the use of the Portuguese army ; the whole
of which, together with the arms were
landed the day they arrived; and the next
day 5000 Portuguese troops marched from
Oporto for Vigo, who were chiefly commanded
by British officers. Several detachments
of Portuguese regiments, amounting
together to about 8000 men, were left to
garrison Oporto, the greater part of which
were not armed. Immediately on intelligence
being received at Oporto, of the
victory obtained by our troops at Talavera,
a general illumination took place for three
nights. About 1100 Portuguese troops who
left Oporto to join the British army, a few
days before the action took place, fell in with a division of the French army, who massacred the whole of them.
