Full Text
As was expected and predicted, the saloon celebrations that were held on Saturday resulted in a series of disgraceful drunken brawls and riots. It is a disgrace to any community that, under the pretense of celebrating the nation's birthday, it should bow down before the Moloch of the saloon and, instead of observing the day itself, when the law compels the closing of the rum shops, select another day for the express purpose of evading the law and permitting those who choose to do so to indulge in a grand old drunk. It is a profanation of liberty and patriotism to term such scenes of drunken revelry and debauchery a Fourth of July celebration.
