HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

New Jersey Election.

Mr. Campbell, from the Committee on Elections, reported in conformity with the resolution of the House of the 20th ult., requiring them to report certain facts "forthwith." The report is a long and metaphysical one, relating partly to the duties of the Committee under their instructions. The report concludes as follows :

" Thus it appears that, prima facie, upon the evidence in the possession of the committee, Philemon Dickerson, Peter D. Vroom, Daniel B. Ryall, Wm R Cooper, and Joseph Kille are the "five of the ten individuals claiming seats from the State of New Jersey received the greatest number of lawful votes from the whole State for Representatives in the Congress of the United States at the election of 1838 in said State."

Mr. Fillmore moved that the Report be recommitted, for certain reasons which he mentioned, but Mr. Petriken obtained the floor, after a long scuffle upon the question of order, and offered a resolution for the admission of Messrs Dickerson, Vroom, &c. to their seats, and thereon, moved the previous question.

Here commenced motions for adjournment which were repeated from time to time, till near 8 o'clock.

About 8 o'clock, Mr. Hopkins appealed to the House to adjourn and prosecute this business in the morning, The yeas and nays were taken on the motion, and it became shown to the House that there was a majority of ten against the adjournment. Before the result was announced, many of the Whigs began to change their votes and go against the adjournment. Some of the Administration members on the boards changed their votes. Finally, the result was declared: yeas 85, nays 92. Before any action was had, some one again moved an adjournment— no, no.— cried some of the Whig members— "it is a good time to take the vote" However, the House adjourned—yeas 85, nays 92.
